Dr Bashir Qureshi FRCGP, FRCPCH, FFFP-RCOG, AFOM-RCP, Hon. FRSH, Hon. MAPHA-USA, has been elected as the Chairman of the NHS Trusts Association on 26 September, 2006. He is an ardent supporter of the NHSTA’s aims & objectives to facilitate communication, education and supporting research among and about the NHS Trusts. Dr Qureshi had a distinguished career in National Health Service, medical and healthcare organisations , health promotion bodies, medical politics, healthcare journalism as well as broadcasting, British community relations activities, and also in lecturing nationally and internationally, for 42 years. As a clinician, since 1964, he had wide experience in the NHS and served patients in medical disciplines of general practice, community child health and paediatrics, public health, and occupational medicine. In addition, he also practised in armed forces and prison medical services in the UK. At the same time, he had contributed actively in medical politics and has been a member of numerous committees of the British Medical Association and the London wide Local Medical Committee. In past 42 years, he did enormous voluntary work for medical and healthcare organisations and charities. He served the Royal College of GPs for 30 years. He became the first ethnic minority GP to be nationally elected to Council in 1990 and served for nine years. He was also elected as the Provost of its NW London Faculty, for four years. He has served the British Red Cross, since 1972, and is now the Medical Advisor of the London Area. He was awarded a Badge of Honour of the British Red Cross in 1990, for his distinguished service. He has a keen interest in health promotion. He served the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health, since 1974, serving its Council for 25 years. He became its Chairman in 1998 and is now its Emeritus Vice President. He is also Honorary Vice President of the Institute of Health Promotion. The list of serving on such organisations is long. Dr Qureshi is a Medical Journalist and a Guest Broadcaster on health issues. He was the editor of “London Medicine” and had served on many editorial boards, including the “Health Trends”, which was the journal of the Department of Health. He sits on Judging Panels for medical book competitions run annually by the BMA Library, and separately by the Society of Authors and the Royal Society of Medicine. He is also serves on the Judging Panel for the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for higher and further education in Britain. Finally, Dr Qureshi pioneered the new discipline of Transcultural Medicine- Dealing with Patients from Different Cultures, Religions and Ethnicities. He is the author of the book on this subject. Since 1981, he has written 160 articles in medical journals and given 378 lectures to medical meetings in the UK the USA, India and Tanzenia. He is an established Expert Witness on Cultural, Religious and Ethnic Issues in Litigation, since 1992. As the Expert Witness on this subject, he assists courts in the UK, by writing reports and giving evidence.
